My Crack Addict Group

I started teaching again at the recovery place for crack addicts. It’s about an hour drive from my house. They wanted to know if I’d come and teach on Tuesday nights. I’d drive three hours for these guys. There are 18 of them. I love them. They are so energizing to be around. They are like sponges. All smiles. I like their smiles. I like it when their eyes get big when some type of truth hits home or when they laugh at something I’ve said.

They gave me gas money at the end. They walked up and laid dollar bills and one African-American guy about 6’ 2” gave me a twenty. That was grace. He smiled. I smiled. Sometimes it’s hard to receive. Pride. Then this other guy walks up and says, “This is all I got, but I wanted to give it to you. Thank you for coming.”

It was about fifty cents worth of change. Made up of a bunch of nickels and pennies. It was grace too. I thought about the story Jesus told about the woman who gave a widow’s mite, which was about like one-fifth of a cent if I’m remembering correctly. He gave more than the guy who gave me twenty, because he gave everything he had. Tonight was grace. Tonight I smiled. Tonight I remembered why.
